Magnet Types - Neodymium and Samarium Cobalt

Neodymium magnets or Samarium Cobalt magnets in your bracelet - Which is best. This article explains about the different types of magnets and why they perform differently in magnetic bracelets.

Summary

Neodymium has a slightly higher magnetism capacity than Samarium Cobalt. However, both types are normally magnetised to a raw 3,000 gauss. The capping process that a neodymium magnet should undergo for rust protection on a bracelet, will reduce the effective strength available to you to below that of a safely used Samarium Cobalt magnet of equal size and rating.

You can read more explanation about this below.

Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium is a rare earth metal, although it is not really a rare material as is is found in the Earths crust at levels of 38ppm. Neodymium magnets are extremely high powered magnets, They are also cheap to produce, and lose their magnetism at higher temperatures.

The nature of Neodymium is that it is unstable in the the air. As a result it will rust quickly without a stong protective process called capping. Insufficient capping will result in allergic reactions against rust for many people. Therefore to use ordinary neodymium magnets safely in a bracelet they should be capped.

The capping process reduces the effective power (EP) of the magnet that is available to the wearer.

After capping, the magnets are then coated with epoxy to hold them in place. Coating also effectively lowers the EP.

Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Samarium is a rare earth metal. Samarium Cobalt magnets are extremely high powered in comparison to their mass. They keep their magnetism better than any other magnet. They are expensive to produce.

The nature of Samaium is that it is stable in the air, so it does not rust quickly like Neodymium. As a result the magnets do not require capping to make them safe, thus the EP is not reduced to the same extent as Neodymium when used on a bracelet. Samarium is natually anti rust and therefore hypo allergenic.

Claims About Magnetic Strength

Many suppliers only stock Neodymium magnets as these are the cheaper option. If they do not want to pay extra for Samarium Cobalt they will claim that neodymium magnets are stronger. This does not tell the full facts about the power available to you on a bracelet. As Calm N Comfy stock both types we have nothing to hide.

Some stockists also apply a marketing trick of quoting the strength of their lower cost copper bangles after capping, then make their stainless steel range sound better by quoting the uncapped strength for the stainless steel bracelets. At Calm N Comfy we always give you both:

Capped/coated = protected
Uncapped = raw.

It is true that the maximum possible strength of Neodymium magnets (approx 14,000 gauss) is marginally stronger than the maximum possible strength of Samaruim cobalt magnets (approx 11,000 gauss), However, for magnetic bracelets a rating of 3,000 gauss per magnet is considered high strength yet safe.

Both types of magnets can easily be magnetised to 3,000 gauss and the magnets on all of our copper, stainless steel & titanium bracelets have this raw pawer. However, because the capping process is necessary for rust protection on neodymium the EP ends up higher on a samarium cobalt magnet than a neodymium magnet of an equal size and rating.

Our Recommendations

If effective power is your priority and you want a magnetic bracelet that will give you the maximum effective power we recommend you purchase a bracelet with Samarium cobalt magnets.

If cost is your priority we recommend a bracelet with neodymium magnets, although they still work well the effective strength will be less than that of a bracelet using Samarium Cobalt Magnets of equal size and rating.
